Blacktown City Council has been awarded the prestigious title of NSW Overall Sustainable Cities Winner for 2024, in recognition of its outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
The 2024 Sustainable Cities awards were presented on 10th October at a KAB NSW function hosted by the by previous year’s winner, Penrith City Council.
Since its inception in 1994, the Sustainable Cities Awards program has been instrumental in recognizing and rewarding the incredible efforts of metropolitan Sydney Councils, community groups, businesses, schools, and individuals who are leading the way in sustainable practices and initiatives.
In addition to the overall trophy, Blacktown also took out the Communication & Engagement Award for its Multi Engagement for Multi-Unit Dwellings project and the Heritage & Culture Award for Blacktown Arts Makers Space with Tarni Eastwood. Caddies Creek Public School, within the Blacktown LGA also received highly commended in the Young Legends category.
KAB NSW Sustainable Cities Assessor, Peter Clark, commended Blacktown’s sustainability initiatives, stating, “Blacktown City Council’s dedication to sustainability serves as an inspiring model for cities everywhere. The collaborative approach between Council and the community drives their various initiatives which is a testament to the power of community, innovation, and a shared vision for a sustainable future.”
Val Southam, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, commended Blacktown and all the other participants in the Sustainable Cities Awards, stating, “The Sustainable Cities Awards showcase the inspiring work being done by councils, organisations, and individuals across greater Sydney to create a more sustainable future. Blacktown’s achievements are a testament to the positive impact that dedicated individuals and communities can have on the environment. Congratulations to Blacktown City Council and its community on this well-deserved recognition.”
The awards program and event were held with the support of Penrith City Council, the NSW EPA, and Red Energy.
